23rd District Profile
The 23rd Senatorial District, represented by Sen. Royce West, lies wholly within Dallas County. The statutory State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC) members for our senate district are Shay Wyrick-Cathey and Ken Molberg. We are also represented on the SDEC by State Rep. Roberto Alonzo, from the House Democratic Caucus, and Daniel Davis Clayton, president of the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and State Rep. Yvonne Davis serve on the Democratic National Committee and are members of the district.
Senate District 23 is entitled to elect some 373 delegates and an equal number of alternates to the Texas Democratic Convention, scheduled for June 6-7, 2008, in Austin. The allocation of these delegates and alternates will be based upon the presidential preference sign-in at our senatorial district convention.
Plans currently call for the entire district to caucus on the late afternoon of Friday, June 7, in Austin - just prior to the opening of the state convention. At that time, the 23rd Senatorial District will elect six delegates and one alternate (a female) to the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Because of the vote in the district on primary day, Sen. Barack Obama will receive 4 national delegates and the one alternate. Sen. Hillary Clinton will receive 2 national delegates. Some statistics: Barack Obama received 73 percent of the Senate District 23 vote on March 4, 2008, and Hillary Clinton received 27 percent.
