So, what is the caucus process?
What are the requirements to be a delegate?
To serve as a Texas Democratic delegate a person must be legally able to vote and to have voted in the Democratic primary, which took place March 4.
When and where are Senatorial Conventions taking place?
District 23 will hold their convention on Saturday, March 29th at the Ellis Davis Field House, 9191 South Polk St., Dallas, TX 75232. The convention will begin at 9am.
Other district conventions will take place in each of the 31 Texas Senatorial Districts on March 29. Times and locations vary according to districts, but most should be finalized by March 18. Call your local Democratic Party for more information.
What will happen at the Senatorial Conventions?
Precinct Delegates will elect state delegates and alternates. Texas is poised to play a decisive role in selecting the next Democratic candidate,
meaning more people than usual may attend. Officials predict the event will take up to six hours.
How do I know if I'm a Precinct Delegate?
1) You voted in the Democratic Primary, attended the Precinct Convention and were nominated and elected as either a delegate or an alternate.
2) You were chosen as a delegate or alternate after the Precinct Convention to fill a vacant space. If your precinct has vacant spaces for delegates or alternates, you may contact your precinct chair to volunteer for that position.
Can I still become a delegate or alternate?
If there are vacancies in your precinct for your candidate, "yes", until March 29th.
What happens if I don't attend the convention?
An alternate can fill your position. Please contact your precinct chair to alert them. If you and your alternate do not show, your candidate may not have sufficient delegates to represent them and they may end up with less votes.
If you are interested in being a State Delegate but cannot attend the District Convention, you can still be nominated, but it is best to let someone who is attending know of your interest in serving as a delegate at the state level.
What should I wear?
Delegates and visitors should dress comfortably.
May I bring my children?
Children are welcome, but it will be require up to six hours of sitting and/or standing.
Will there be food provided?
Yes, there will be concessionaires selling various food items on location.
Are there facilities for seniors and disabled citizens?
Yes, all sites must comply with the American Disabilities Act.
Are visitors welcome?
Yes, anyone is welcome to view the process but only delegates may vote. After viewing the dynamic process, maybe you can join in the next presidential election!
What is an alternate?
Delegates are not always able to attend every convention session or every caucus. Alternates fill in during a delegate's absence. Alternates may speak and vote on all convention issues during the delegate's absence. Alternates may attend all caucuses and sessions even if the delegate is present.
Will there be any chance to personally meet elected officials?
Yes. In addition to many officeholders addressing the full convention, they will be just walking around the convention arena. Candidates running for open offices will also be onsite. Keep your eyes open and you will be able to see and meet a number of them.
